Show Coat Maintenance

Zemo is a 1 year old Toy Poodle. He is in the process of coat change and is being bathed twice a week. Maintaining a full show coat takes time and dedication. Young dogs need time to settle into this maintenance routine. Be kind to your dog and let him settle and enjoy the experience. This process cannot be rushed or avoided. The commitment is real! Colleen demonstrates how this maintenance process works and how to band correctly.

PART 1 Undoing the bands and getting the dog ready for the bath.

PART 2 Zemo has been bathed and is ready to be stretch-dried with a gentle dryer.

PART 3 Drying the coat takes time. Do not rush this section. Never use a slicker brush on any hair that is being sprayed up.

PART 4 Zemo is learning to rest his head on a pillow while he is being banded. Banding helps reduce hair breakage, matting and tangles. When banding, avoid twisting the hair. Make sure the bands are not too tight, and always ensure that the dog is comfortable.

Study Notes | Key Concepts

    • Remove bands carefully using curved scissors to avoid pulling and breakage, starting from the back and working forward.

    • Apply conditioning spray or Pro Magic while removing bands to make the hair easier to separate.

    • Maintain a frequent bathing schedule (every 3–5 days) to manage coat changes and matting.

    • Use conditioner generously to reduce matting and keep the hair smooth for banding.

    • Use a blow dryer with a low-speed but high-heat setting to stretch dry hair sections straight.

    • Fluff dry with a slicker brush for short sections and a pin brush for longer areas, avoiding the use of slickers on long top knots.

    • Start banding at the top of the head, then work down the neck, creating even sections without tight pulls.

    • Check each band for tension and movement to prevent pulling on the skin and maintain flexibility for the dog’s comfort.

    • Check banding and hair alignment from multiple angles to ensure symmetry.

    • Use finishing products to keep the coat soft and tangle-free, and reband if needed.
