Hungarian Wirehaired Vizla

Hand stripping can be very rewarding on Hounds, Terriers and Gundogs. Before you start, it is very important to understand what tools to use and how to use them. Throughout these tutorials Michelle will explain the difference between Gundog and Terrier stripping tools.

Part 1

  • An introduction to why we hand strip.

  • Exploring the tools: Pumicestone, stripping knife, finger condoms + Powder Puff – which areas of the body to use them on and how to use them effectively.

Part 2

  • Using the stripping knife and finger condoms on Nimrod’s head.

  • Michelle explains the layers in the coat, and rolling the coat.

  • See the difference between a finished head, neck and chest side, compared to the unfinished side.

Study Notes | Key Concepts

    • Wire-coated dogs require hair removal (stripping), not just undercoat removal (carding).

    • Carding knives are more suited to gundog breeds with softer coats.

    • Pumice Stone: Best for beginners; safest tool to avoid coat cutting.

    • Stripping Knife: For more experienced users; must be used carefully to avoid breaking hair.

    • Finger Condoms and Powder: Useful for fine detailing (ears, flatwork).

    • Correct Pulling Technique:

Always pull with the grain of the hair.

Keep wrist straight to prevent carpal tunnel injury.

Thumb-to-finger motion; support skin to reduce discomfort.

    • A blown coat parts easily, appears lighter, coarser, fuzzy at the ends.

    • Hand strip regularly to avoid total blowout and coat breakage.

    • Ears: Very satisfying to strip; dead hair comes out easily.

    • Cheeks and Skull: Follow coat grain carefully; blend into neck for muscular look.

    • Cowlicks: Watch throat and rear where hair grows differently.

    • Some bald patches are normal after overdue stripping.

    • Coat regrows healthy and vibrant within 1–2 weeks.

    • Prepare owners for possible patchiness and recommend regular 2–6 week visits for maintenance.

    • Emphasise benefits of improved coat health and natural protection.
