 Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

GILBERT

Meet Gilbert, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen—also known as a PBGV, for short. Either is a mouthful! This French hound was originally bred to chase hares in Vendeen. He’s a scruffy, ruggedly handsome fellow, and Michelle is preparing to compete with him.

PART 1 Michelle is preparing Gilbert's coat for competition day. She is hand stripping the back with finger condoms, powder, carding knife, finishing comb and the diamastripper. Gilbert is being regularly groomed in order to be ready for comp day.

PART 2 Setting in Gilbert's rear and shoulder angulation. Michelle combs the coat up, finds any long sections of coat and removes them. This is fine tuning the coat in order for a healthy coat to come through. Gilbert is a young dog, Michelle works with him to settle him into the process

PART 3 The neck. The breed standard calls for a long and straight neck.

PART 4 The head study. The breed standard requires a scruffy head type.

Study Notes | Key Concepts

    • Use hand stripping to maintain coat texture; tools like finger condoms, stripping powder, and carding knives help achieve grip and control.

    • Focus on removing only the dead hair by identifying it through its white tips and scruffy texture.

    • For a blown coat, strip weekly to allow the coat to grow back evenly and maintain color and thickness.

    • Handle sensitive spots like the ears, tail, and neck carefully, using a gentle, slow approach with finger stripping.

    • Strip the tail to a tight point, focusing on a carrot shape at the base and removing only dead tips.

    • Ears require special care, with long hair left on the outer ear and a tight oval shape achieved by stripping close to the leather on the inside.

    • Shape the body to maintain the top line by stripping along the shoulders and back.

    • Blend the underline by working along the rib cage, leaving a slight chest and ensuring an even tuck up.

    • Strip around the legs for a column-like appearance, with tight, rounded feet to accentuate the PBGV’s stance.

    • Brush and comb through regularly to identify and remove any remaining dead hair.

    • Check for symmetry across the body, especially the head, neck, and leg furnishings, to avoid unbalanced areas.

    • For a polished look, roll the coat weekly to encourage even growth and maintain a scruffy, healthy coat.

    • Scissor ears into a rounded shape rather than leaving them straight.

    • Blend any harsh clipper lines for a smoother finish.

    • Always double-check for any stray hairs before finishing.
