Study Notes | Key Concepts
-
Hand strip using tools like a pumice stone or stripping knife to remove the dead, blown coat.
Maintain a smooth top layer by removing dead hair without over-stripping to avoid bald patches.
Pull dead hair out slowly in small sections to prevent discomfort, especially on a young or sensitive dog.
-
Areas like the tail, neck, and flanks can be sensitive. Use finger stripping in these spots for comfort.
Hold the skin taut while stripping to minimize discomfort and achieve a cleaner look.
For the tail, use thumb and finger with a bit of chalk to help grip and control hair removal.
-
For eyebrows, shape by removing excess hair to achieve a bushy look as per breed standards.
Strip the beard carefully to preserve shape; blend from the corner of the eye to the mouth without creating bald spots.
Use thumb and finger or gentle tools to work around the eyes, being mindful of the sensitive skin.
-
Comb regularly to check for any unevenness in the coat. Avoid leaving stray, longer hairs for a uniform look.
When working on the body, follow the natural muscle structure, and keep the coat tight and close to the skin.
Go over the coat with a stripping knife or pumice stone to remove fuzz and maintain a smooth appearance.
-
After stripping, use a carding knife lightly on the undercoat to reduce fluff and reveal rich color.
For optimal coat health, repeat grooming every two months to manage the coat cycle and encourage healthy regrowth.
Regular stripping helps prevent dead undercoat buildup and keeps the coat looking vibrant and balanced.
