Bearded Collie

Bearded Collie specialist and breeder Michele Lincoln shares her expertise with us. In this video you will learn how to layer or line brush, how to de-mat tangles and which tools to use. She demonstrates the hygiene clip, pads and feet, and some light trimming on this full coated dog.

This dog has been bathed and dryed already, but if you would like to learn more about those processes, you could follow the Afghan bath and dry tutorial for a very similar example of how to manage all that hair!

Study Notes | Key Concepts

    • Fully dry the coat, especially under the body, feet, and tail areas, to prevent matting.

    • Use a light spray of water or detangling solution for smooth brushing.

    • Brush in layers, taking sections of coat and brushing upward to reach the base and remove all tangles

    • Trim hair between pads, especially for show dogs, to prevent slipping on smooth surfaces.

    • Tidy the hair around the toes minimally to give a polished look without over-trimming.

    • Use curved shears for a natural finish around the foot to avoid a blunt or choppy look.

    • Keep hygiene areas clean by trimming minimally around the bottom, avoiding a heavily trimmed look.

    • Use thinning shears or chunkers for a soft, natural appearance when removing bulk from the coat.

    • Preserve the natural, full coat by using thinning shears carefully to keep trimming unnoticeable.

    • Apply a protein balm to coat ends to protect and condition, adding a healthy shine.

    • Gently distribute residual balm across the coat for light, even conditioning.

    • Brush the top hair back on the head and secure with a clip or band for a tidy appearance.
