ADVANCED GROOMING TUTORIALS
Basset Fauve de Bretagne
Maurice
The Basset Fauve de Bretangne originated in the South of France where they were used as scent hounds to flush out small animals. They are sociable, affectionate and courageous, but can be stubborn!
Nicole leads us through the correct procedures for hand stripping this stunning (and rather distinguished wouldn’t you say?) breed.
PART 1 Maurice is hand stripped every 4-6 weeks. Nicole starts her work on the jacket.
PART 2 Each dog has a least favourite part of the groom. Maurice has a few sensitive areas. Nicole manages him and the groom by giving him lots of breaks.
PART 3 Flat work on the head set up can take time, especially if the coat is blown.
PART 4 Nicole works on Mo's rear assembly. Here we set-in the base of the tail, the tail and back to the ears.

Study Notes | Key Concepts
-
Use hand stripping to remove the dead topcoat while preserving the undercoat for coverage and texture.
When pulling out dead hair, identify it by the white tips, indicating it’s ready to be removed.
For blown coats, you can use a carding rake to remove loose hair but avoid over-card to maintain coat density.
-
Be mindful of sensitive areas such as the sides, neck, and tail. Use a gentle approach with small amounts of hair at a time.
For dogs new to hand stripping, gradually introduce stripping to build tolerance over time.
On areas like the cheeks and head, strip only in short sections to prevent discomfort.
-
Shape the dog’s underline and shoulder areas by stripping to expose the muscular frame while leaving a skirt effect on the underline.
Use thumb and finger stripping along the shoulders and neck to blend naturally into the body without harsh lines.
Maintain length on the legs to highlight muscle, and ensure the coat lies flat along the dog’s sides and shoulders.
-
Use finger stripping on the head and cheeks for detailed flat work, allowing natural color to show through.
Carefully strip around the eyes and ears, exposing key areas to help the dog see and hear comfortably.
For eyebrows, trim to a small length, removing longer hairs to avoid a bulky appearance.
-
Brush the coat against the grain to spot remaining dead hairs needing removal.
Check for symmetry in the coat length on both sides, especially in the shoulders and underline.
For sensitive ears and tail tips, use a lighter hand and limit stripping time to prevent irritation.
