Afghan Hound

Do you know there are 2 distinct coat types in the Afghan Breed? We show you the difference and give the (stunning) Ryan a lovely bath in Plush Puppy.

After correct bathing of a long drop coated breed, it is very important to blow dry and groom out the coat correctly. This is a different method than normal.

The Afghan Hound is a 'naturally' groomed dog, so a natural look is required when using scissors. We take you through these skills in this video.

Study Notes | Key Concepts

  • Afghan Hounds can have two coat types: thick, massive coats like Ryan's or sparse coats. The coat type depends on the breed line, as some are bred for mountainous regions and others for desert climates.

    • Avoid scrubbing the coat, as it can cause matting. Instead, use a hydro bath and gently apply shampoo and conditioner.

    • Focus on areas like feet and groin without roughing up the coat.

    • Use heavier conditioners to help manage long coats and reduce grooming time.

    • When rinsing out the conditioner, leave about 10% to help keep the coat manageable without leaving it greasy.

    • Use a slow dryer, as force dryers can damage and knot the coat.

    • Gently squeeze out excess water with a towel before drying.

    • Use line brushing to ensure even drying, focusing on the skin first before the ends of the hair.

    • Use a pin brush without baubles to avoid damaging the coat.

    • Slickers can be used carefully for knots, but be gentle to avoid removing too much coat.

    • For show dogs, hand stripping is preferred over clipping.

    • Thumb-and-finger techniques can be used to maintain a natural texture.

    • Clipping can be done with a comb attachment but should always blend naturally into the coat.

    • The feet should be scissored into a round shape for show standards.

    • Avoid cutting too much off, as this can disrupt the balance.

    • Keep trimming in layers to achieve the desired shape.

    • Properly wrap ears without involving the ear leather, as wrapping the leather can lead to severe damage.

    • Use heavy-duty wraps for durability, and make sure the elastic band is tight enough to stay in place during activity.
