Reggie is getting a classic Miniature Schnauzer pet trim with Nicky, with a short patterned body, neat column legs, skirt, brows and beard. But this is very much a pet groom, and Reggie’s recent grooming history has a say in how Nicky approaches it.
He arrived with significant knots through his longer coat and isn’t particularly appreciative when they’re found. Rather than leaving lots of leg and skirt simply because that’s the traditional picture, Nicky takes them shorter to make the coat more manageable between visits
Part 1 | Setting the Schnauzer pattern
Nicky starts the body with a purple attachment comb over a #30 blade, setting the rear, underline, shoulders and neck.
A big focus here is where the underline belongs. It sits underneath the dog rather than creeping up the sides of the ribcage. Nicky shows a simple comb trick for learning the line, then demonstrates how to flick and blend with the clippers so there isn’t a hard transition between the short body and longer furnishings.
Part 2 | A shorter, more manageable pet trim
Reggie’s legs and underline are deliberately kept short. Nicky works through the underline and chest, softening hard edges and showing where the Schnauzer beard should begin at the lip line rather than extending backwards into the neck.
Reggie also toes in slightly, so Nicky uses the coat to create cleaner column legs rather than simply following every part of his natural outline.
Part 3 | Building balanced column legs
The front legs need to balance with the rear, so Nicky repeatedly steps back and assesses the shape from different angles. Parallel lines are the goal, with any bulges or hard scissor marks softened back into the overall shape.
There’s also a useful scissoring lesson here: curves and blenders can make some jobs easier, but learning to control straight scissors builds skills that transfer across far more grooms.
Part 4 | Ears, brows & beard
The Schnauzer head brings all those characteristic details together. Nicky clips the ears, eyes and skull before shaping the brows and beard.
Watch particularly how she creates the brows. Rather than simply cutting them to length, she removes weight and builds a little supporting layer underneath so they sit correctly while still leaving Reggie with a clear line of vision.
Finally, the beard is brought forward and shaped from the lip line, creating the hooked profile rather than a large square block of hair hanging from the face.
