MIXED BREEDS
Straight or Drop Coat
MIA
Mia is a cute Maltese cross. Mia has what we call 'Queen Anne' legs. This is common in Maltese and Shih Tzu cross breeds. Care must be taken when working around these legs to avoid discomfort to the dog. Chuckie demonstrates a gentle pet trim, with all her little tips and tricks for maintaining the comfort of the dog, and hiding the not so perfect areas of Mia (if we can be so bold!)
Part 1 Mia is having a 19 mm trim on her body. Chuckie skims off her front legs. Pressure from the clippers can harm deformed legs.
Part 2 Chuckie sets in some rear angulation and trims the rear legs. These legs are very bandy.
Part 3 Mia has very bandy front legs, Chuckie uses scissors to negate this ‘fault’. By styling the legs and leaving more hair at a bend, you can create the illusion of a straight leg.
Part 4 The head study. Mia has a 19mm on her head, as well as the body. Chuckie uses a combination of curved scissors, chunkers and thinners to set the head in.
COCO
Coco and Nick perform a cute little salon trim. Coco is a Pom x Poodle and has an interesting coat - we actually weren’t sure whether to pop this tutorial under straight or curly coats! It’s fluffy. But straight. And thinning. Making the most of a dog’s unique features, in this case, the ears, really lets the personality of the pup shine through!
EQUIPMENT LIST Clippers, #30 blade, orange & light blue comb attachments, straights, thinners, chunkers, and a finishing comb
PART 1 Clipping the body with an orange comb, how to scoop into the tops of the legs to prep for scissoring
PART 2 The head and face - start with the clipper work for eficiency. Reversing a light blue comb over the head, scissoring the visor and face, finessing the ears with a light wave of the thinning shears
PART 3 Detailed paw and pad work, scissoring perfect little round feet. Scissoring the front legs and feet and blending into the shorter body
PART 4 Scissoring the back legs and feet, finessing the rear to match the scissored legs
MOOSH MOOSH
Moosh Moosh and Michelle demonstrate a salon style trim - a shorter body with longer legs, and cute round face. Michelle also speaks about using routine, speed tips, handling the Maltese x Shih Tzu, and some coat tips.
EQUIPMENT LIST Clippers, #4F blade, orange and yellow extension combs, finishing comb, slicker brush, scissors
Part 1 Working with a pattern can save you time on a Salon trim
Part 2 Using a blade on the body and then an attachment on the legs (instead of scissoring) equals time saving!
Part 3 The ten minute head
Part 4 Using a check point system to check your work for quality and finishing touches is a great habit to get into.
