14 Golden Rules for You and Your Dog Groomer

Because grooming goes best when we’re all on the same team.

1. Be honest about brushing at home.
We can’t reverse months of knots in one session. If your dog hasn’t been brushed regularly, a fluffy teddy cut may not be possible — and de-matting can be painful. We won’t put your dog through that. Need brushing tips? We’ve got you covered.

2. “Short” means something different to everyone.
Try phrases like “half off,” “short but fluffy,” or “shaved short.” Even better - ask what blade or comb was used last time if you liked the result.

3. Show us what you’re after — and talk it through.
A photo can help, especially if it shows a dog with a similar breed and coat type. But pictures don’t always tell the full story. Let us know what you’re hoping to achieve, and we’ll explain whether it’s possible today, next time, or not at all — and why.

4. Your dog’s behaviour affects the final look.
Even sweet dogs can struggle with grooming if they’re anxious, panting heavily, or can’t sit still. This might mean we keep things simpler for safety’s sake. We’ll always do what we can, but your dog’s wellbeing comes first.

5. Mention any changes — health, mood, or home life.
A slight limp, new medication, or a change in the household (like a new baby or visitor) can impact how your dog handles grooming. The more we know, the better we can care for them.

6. Be upfront about fleas.
There’s no shame — we just need to know so we can manage it properly and protect other dogs. We’ll also talk you through the next steps.

7. Make sure your dog has had a toilet break.
A full bladder or belly makes for an uncomfortable groom. A quick walk before the appointment helps your dog relax.

8. Let us know about treats and allergies.
We often use treats to make the experience more positive. If your dog has dietary restrictions or sensitivities, just give us a heads-up.

9. Preferred shampoo or products?
Whether it’s medicated, vet-prescribed, or just your favourite brand, we’re happy to use it — just bring it along or let us know in advance.

10. Sensitive areas? We want to know.
Some dogs don’t love the clippers around their paws, face, or back end. We’ll handle them with extra care if we know ahead of time.

11. Let us know if you might not be able to pick up promptly.
Most dogs are ready to head home the moment we finish. If you think you might be delayed or unavailable when we call to say your dog is ready, please let us know in advance. Waiting too long after the groom can be stressful, especially for anxious or senior dogs.

12. Share feedback after the groom.
If your dog seems unusually itchy, flat, or fussy - tell us. We want to help and make adjustments if needed.

13. Stick to regular grooming appointments.
Consistency helps us maintain your dog’s coat, makes brushing easier, and builds trust — especially for younger or anxious dogs.

14. Remember — we both want what’s best for your dog!
We're here to help your dog feel great and look great. When you and your groomer work together, everyone wins.

Got questions about working with your groomer? Here are the top tips we hear most often

What should I tell my groomer about my dog’s coat?
Be honest about brushing at home and mention if your dog has mats. Photos help, but your groomer will explain what’s realistic.

Does my dog’s behaviour affect the haircut?
Yes. Anxious or wiggly dogs may need simpler trims for safety. Your dog’s wellbeing always comes first.

Should I mention my dog’s health or lifestyle changes?
Absolutely. New meds, limps, or even a new baby at home can affect how your dog copes with grooming.

What should I do before a grooming appointment?
Give your dog a toilet break, mention any allergies, and let your groomer know about sensitive areas or preferred products.

Why are regular grooming appointments important?
Consistency makes coat care easier, builds trust, and keeps your dog more comfortable between grooms.
