KENJI
Meet little Kenji, a Yorkshire Terrier getting a neat, easy-to-maintain pet groom. Rather than maintaining the traditional long Yorkie coat, Jess uses a 10mm dark blue attachment comb through the body, tidies and shapes the legs, finishes his little flag tail and creates a cute rounded head that suits him beautifully.
Yorkie coat can be deceptively tricky to shape. Its fine, silky texture behaves very differently from a plush or curly coat, particularly when you’re trying to create a full, rounded face. Throughout the groom, Jess shows how she uses clipping, scissoring, combing and blending together to get a clean finish while working with the natural fall of the coat.
PART 1 Jess begins with the 10mm attachment comb, working systematically around Kenji’s body and legs and showing how she uses the clipper to do as much of the groundwork as possible before reaching for her scissors.
She also sets up the neck and head from the occiput, clips neatly behind the ears and creates a tucked neckline beneath the jaw, giving the finished head a much cleaner foundation.
PART 2 With the body established, it’s time to tackle all those silky bits the attachment comb leaves behind. Jess demonstrates neat little cat feet using thinners to soften the straight coat, then works around each leg with a finishing comb and scissors to create clean lines without unnecessarily removing length.
She finishes with Kenji’s simple flag-style tail, keeping it tidy and functional while working with the coat he has.
PART 3 This is where Kenji really appears. Jess clears the eyes, sets the fringe and blocks in the basic head shape before creating a rounded muzzle and lifting those droopy-looking corners into a much brighter expression.
She then uses thinners to remove bulk and soften the shape, curves and straights to sharpen the finished outline, and works with Kenji’s ear carriage to bring the whole head together. It’s a particularly handy demonstration of creating a soft, round face on a coat that naturally wants to fall straight down.
