Dogs communicate throughout the grooming process. In fact, they are constantly communicating, but groomers haven’t always been taught how to recognise what they’re saying, or what to do with that information to help make grooming an enjoyable, or at the very least tolerable, experience for the dog.
Modern Principles of Behaviour-Informed Dog Grooming brings current thinking around canine behaviour, learning, stress and welfare into the grooming environment. It looks at how dogs experience grooming, how behaviour can build and escalate, and how groomers can respond in ways that support both the dog and their own safety.
Created specifically for dog groomers, the course moves from understanding canine communication and stress through to choice and agency, reinforcement, handling, the grooming environment, working with owners and making behaviour-informed decisions in everyday grooming practice.
It’s not about expecting every dog to love every part of grooming, or turning groomers into dog trainers. It’s about understanding the dog in front of you well enough to make better decisions about how you proceed.
