Dog Grooming Theory

The Learning Journey

Whether you're new to dog grooming or looking to strengthen your understanding of the profession, our 5 Dog Grooming Theory blocks brings together the knowledge that supports thoughtful, informed grooming. Delivered across five progressive learning blocks, the program explores everything from canine behaviour and coat types to styling theory, breed characteristics, workplace safety, business and professional development.

Designed as the theory component of our Industry Certification pathway, each block can be completed individually or as part of a complete learning journey, allowing you to build your knowledge at a pace that suits you. Also available as a subscription for businesses to assist in on the job training and development.

Block 1 | Foundations of Dog Grooming

Meet the dog before the groom. Block 1 explores canine history, breed groups, behaviour, health, workplace safety, first aid, coat types, grooming tools and client communication. It's where you'll build the understanding that supports every decision you'll make throughout your grooming career.

Block 2 | Groomer's Assistant

Great grooming starts long before the scissors come out. Block 2 focuses on bathing, drying, skin and coat preparation, products, equipment and the daily responsibilities of a grooming assistant. You'll also begin applying your knowledge through breed-specific demonstrations and practical assessments.

Block 3 | Pet Stylist

This is where everything begins to come together. Block 3 introduces clipping, scissoring, pet styling, mixed breeds, breed group styling and special grooming situations including puppies, seniors and matted dogs. Along the way you'll complete written, practical and research-based assessments as you work towards Industry Certification.

Block 4 | Professional Dog Groomer

As your experience grows, so do the decisions you'll make every day. Block 4 explores more challenging grooming situations, advanced scissoring, communication, dematting, salon systems, oodle styling, feedback pitstops and the finer details that help refine your work.

Block 5 | Senior Dog Groomer

The final block is designed for experienced groomers ready to continue developing their knowledge. Advanced styling, leadership, behaviour, ethics, business and specialised grooming topics encourage you to keep learning long after the basics have become second nature.
