GROOMING ARCHETYPE
The Guardian
SIGN: THE HARBOUR
βWhat does this dog need?β
You notice the lip lick, the weight shift, the tail that sits a little lower. For you, a groom is a success when the dog leaves trusting you a little more than when it arrived, even if the bow's a bit wonky.
Youβre great at
Being handed the dog nobody else can manage
Knowing when to slow down, when to stop and when to try again another day
Hearing βshe's never been this calm for anyoneβ at pick-up
WATCH OUT FOR
Feeling every dog's stress, and taking some of it home with you. Also, stopping before the dog needs you to, then feeling guilty about a groom that went perfectly well.
WHEN YOUβRE STUCK, ASK YOURSELF
What am I observing, and what am I assuming?
The nitty gritty
Your moment: the greeting
The first few minutes set the tone for everything. Before a single tool comes out, you're reading the dog: how it moves, how it greets you, and what it's telling you. You've probably said hello to the dog before the owner.
Solo or Crew
Solo Guardians create calm, quiet spaces where nervous dogs can settle. Mobile and home-based setups can suit them beautifully.
Crew Guardians are the one the team hands the βdifficult dogβ to, and the voice that says βlet's give this one a break.β
What you can borrow from the Explorer
Trusting your own judgement, staying steady when a groom wobbles, and knowing thereβs always another way to try. You keep others safe best when you look after yourself too. Put the kettle on.
Your BFF: the Mentor
You share the relationship lens. You ask what the dog needs, and the Mentor asks what the person needs. Between you, a nervous dog's handling plan gets followed at home instead of forgotten in the car park.
When you get stuck, remember
You can't carry every dog home. Put the worry down at the door.
Stopping is a skill, and so is carrying on. You know the difference better than you think.
A dog who struggled today may trust you more next time, because of how you handled it.
You and the other archetypes
Alchemist: you keep their creative plans kind to the dog.
Architect: you help them see that a slightly imperfect groom on a happy dog is still a win.
Sage: together you work out what's behind a dog's fear.
Explorer: they'll find a new way to approach the dog who hates everything.
Guardian and Guardian: the calmest grooming space in town. Possibly the slowest too.
