GROOMING ARCHETYPE

The Mentor

SIGN: THE KEY

β€œHow can I make this click for them?”

You love the moment things click for someone else, whether that's a junior groomer finally nailing the clipping angle or an owner who finally understands why the matting keeps coming back.

You’re great at

  • Explaining the why, not just the what

  • Noticing someone is stuck before they say so

  • Getting clients to brush between visits, which is basically sorcery

WATCH OUT FOR

Saying yes to every β€˜quick question’ until you’ve given a full TED talk at the hydrobath and your own dog is still half dry

WHEN YOU’RE STUCK, ASK YOURSELF

Am I teaching, or am I rescuing?

The nitty gritty

Your moment: the handover

When it's time to hand the dog back, some groomers gird their loins. Mentors come alive. The handover is your stage: the home-care chat, the β€œhere's why the ears look like that,” the owner who leaves understanding their dog a little better.

Solo or Crew

Solo Mentors teach one-on-one, at the handover, or through videos and posts.

Crew Mentors train and build the team, and often end up running it.

What you can borrow from the Alchemist

Creative work of your own, not just everyone else’s progress. You’re allowed a groom that’s just for you. No audience, no commentary.

Your BFF: the Guardian

You share the relationship lens. The Guardian asks what the dog needs, and you ask what the person needs. Between you, a nervous dog's handling plan gets followed at home instead of forgotten in the car park.

When you get stuck, remember

  • Not everyone learns at your speed, and that's nobody's failure.

  • You're allowed to say β€œnot right now.” You are not the salon's help desk.

  • Teach the next step, not the whole staircase.

You and the other archetypes

  • Alchemist: they make the magic, and you explain how it happened.

  • Architect: you turn their standards into steps someone else can follow.

  • Sage: they find the why, and you share it. Wait until they've finished checking.

  • Explorer: they find new methods, and you turn the good ones into team habits.

  • Mentor and Mentor: plenty of explaining, and the dog has nodded off waiting.
